CHANGES OF THE EU POLICIES IN HORTICULTURE AgEcon
Alvisi, Franco; Bagnara, Gian Luca.
The EU policy in horticulture has switched its aim from price support to integration of farmers' income. Regulation 2200/96 established the new European Market Regulation (CMO) in horticulture. On this base the producers' organizations (PO) are no longer a political institution but a real economic organization with the objectives of planning and concentrating the production. At the same time, the UE has promulgated another plan (Decision n.2796 of 10/10/96 applying the objectives of the Reg. 2081/93), which is specific for Italian regions in "Objective 1" namely with low average income. This issue establishes the commercial macro organizations with the target of concentrating the supply of the producers' organizations in order to achieve countervailing...

O IMPACTO DA VOLATILIDADE NOS PREÇOS RECEBIDOS PELOS PRODUTORES DO CAFÉ NO MERCADO INTERNACIONAL AgEcon
Amin, Mario Miguel; Monte, Leila Fatima; Correia, Alessandro De Castro; Santos, Danielle Cristina Gonzaga Dos.

Crop-Based Biofuel Production under Acreage Constraints and Uncertainty AgEcon
Baker, Mindy L.; Hayes, Dermot J.; Babcock, Bruce A..
A myriad of policy issues and questions revolve around understanding the bioeconomy. To gain insight, we develop a stochastic and dynamic general equilibrium model and capture the uncertain nature of key variables such as crude oil prices and commodity yields. We also incorporate acreage limitations on key feedstocks such as corn, soybeans, and switchgrass. We make standard assumptions that investors are rational and engage in biofuel production only if returns exceed what they can expect to earn from alternative investments. The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 mandates the use of 36 billion gallons of biofuels by 2022, with significant requirements for cellulosic biofuel and biodiesel production. We calculate the level of tax credits required...

The Participatory Market Chain Approach: Stimulating pro-poor market-chain innovation AgEcon
Bernet, Thomas; Devaux, Andre; Thiele, Graham; Lopez, Gaston; Velasco, Claudio; Manrique, Kurt; Ordinola, Miguel.
Innovation in the food and agriculture sector is frequently short-circuited by a lack of trust and communication between actors in the market chain. To overcome these problems and stimulate innovation, the Participatory Market Chain Approach (PMCA) brings together small farmers, market agents, and service providers for an intense process of facilitated interaction. The PMCA uses a flexible three-stage participatory process to improve communication, build trust, and facilitate collaboration among participants so that they can jointly identify, analyze, and exploit new market opportunities. The PMCA focuses on innovation in products, technologies, and ways of working together. By carefully selecting market chains and partners, and building in social...

THE POLITICAL ECONOMY OF THE HUMAN RIGHT TO WATER AgEcon
Branco, Manuel Couret; Henriques, Pedro Damiao de Sousa.
A água é essencial à sobrevivência humana.

Efficacy, safety, quality control, marketing and regulatory guidelines for herbal medicines (phytotherapeutic agents) BJMBR
Calixto,J.B..
This review highlights the current advances in knowledge about the safety, efficacy, quality control, marketing and regulatory aspects of botanical medicines. Phytotherapeutic agents are standardized herbal preparations consisting of complex mixtures of one or more plants which contain as active ingredients plant parts or plant material in the crude or processed state. A marked growth in the worldwide phytotherapeutic market has occurred over the last 15 years. For the European and USA markets alone, this will reach about $7 billion and $5 billion per annum, respectively, in 1999, and has thus attracted the interest of most large pharmaceutical companies. Insufficient data exist for most plants to guarantee their quality, efficacy and safety. The idea that...

HÁBITOS DE COMPRA DOS CLIENTES DA FEIRA LIVRE DE ALFENAS-MG AgEcon
Carvalho, Flavia Giolo de; Rezende, Eliane Garcia; Rezende, Marcelo Lacerda de.
The objective of this work was to study the consumer habits of street market customers in the municipality of Alfenas, Minas Gerais state. More specifically, the aim was to characterize the customers according to their social and economic status and purchasing habits and to identify the variables that determine their attendance in the street market. Cluster analysis was done to group customers with similar characteristics and habits. The Logit model was then used to test the effects of the variables on the customer’s attendance. The results indicate that the street market presents a heterogeneous public as far as age, per capita income, schooling and occupation are concerned; it does present, however, similarities as to the reason for preferring the street...

Improving Market Access for Small and Mid-sized Producers through Food Industry Electronic Infrastructure MarketMaker AgEcon
Cho, Khin Mar; Tobias, Donald Jerome.
In recent years there has been a growth in the interest of consumers to buy more locally. An increasing number of farmers are trying to meet the growing demand for locally produced products. Here in New York State, farmers who are direct marketing their product, either direct to consumer or direct to wholesale markets constantly are looking for additional avenues to connect to current customers or grow their customer base. NY MarketMaker is one avenue farmers across New York can utilize to make connections with their customers. This powerhouse database connects buyers, sellers and transportation services and is easily searchable, even for the „technologically‟ challenged. Cornell Cooperative Extension (CUCE) in New York City began this project with the...

Market Institutions: Enhancing the Value of Rural-Urban Links AgEcon
Chowdhury, Shyamal K.; Negassa, Asfaw; Torero, Maximo.
This paper examines how market institutions can affect links between urban and rural areas with specific emphasis on goods market integration in the national context. Traditionally, development researchers and practitioners have focused either on rural market development or on urban market development without considering the interdependencies and synergies between the two. However, more than ever before, emerging local and global patterns such as the modern food value-chain led by supermarkets and food processors, rapid urbanization, changes in dietary composition, and enhanced information and communication technologies point to the need to pay close attention to the role of markets both in linking rural areas with intermediate cities and market towns and...

"ECONOMIC CORRECTNESS" AND AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS AgEcon
Christy, Ralph D..
This address is directed toward applied economists as they provide information to private and public decision makers. Central to this discussion is the role of markets as institutions in achieving society's desired ends. Current "economic correctness" -the view that unfettered markets are superior in achieving efficiency, growth, and welfare- has attempted to return a larger role to the private sector, but the relative roles of market-oriented versus government-oriented solutions to problems are often not well appraised. Views presented herein calls for agricultural economists to move simultaneously toward an understanding of the strategic behavior of firms in imperfectly competitive markets and toward an adoption of policy analysis consistent with a...

Structural and Economic Overview of the Italian Agri-food System: A Focus on Food Prices AgEcon
Cisilino, Federica; Marangon, Francesco; Troiano, Stefania.
An analysis of the main items characterizing the agri-food system highlights the existence of a strong demand for a politically-correct decisional process. This paper analyzes the value of the agri-food sector at national level in terms of Gross Domestic Product, Value Added at basic and current prices (ISTAT), comparing data with the EU level (Eurostat). Farms’ structure and production are analyzed in order to highlight the current situation and future development of the agri-food sector. After an overview of the main structural characteristics of farms, the study focuses on a direct survey (FADN/RICA sample): in order to collect specific data an “ad hoc” questionnaire was drawn up to identify farm characteristics, productive potential and main market...

MARKETING AND CROP INSURANCE COMBINED TO MANAGE RISK ON A CASS COUNTY REPRESENTATIVE FARM AgEcon
Clow, Aaron D.; Flaskerud, George K..
This study analyzed the effects that the use of crop insurance products and marketing alternatives had on the gross revenue per acre for an individual farm in Cass County. Crop insurance products and marketing strategies were analyzed individually to determine if they were effective in minimizing down side risk, and combined to determine if integration created synergies. A whole farm scenario analysis was run that included integrated strategies that implemented the same insurance coverage and marketing alternatives for each crop. Several general conclusions can be drawn for situations similar to the representative farm. When analyzed at the individual crop level, the use of crop insurance at the 65 percent level minimizes down side risk in wheat and corn,...
